Emerges in B’klyn court at slay trial

It was a dusty old photograph capturing the moment when three strange bedfellows came together — and yesterday, it surfaced as evidence at a Brooklyn Mafia murder trial.
The photo shows then-US Sen. Alfonse D’Amato flanked by two smiling mobsters, and Brooklyn federal prosecutors unveiled it as they built a racketeering case against a ranking Gambino crime-family capo.
Bartolomeo Vernace — one of three senior mobsters sitting on the crime family’s ruling panel — is accused of gunning down two bar owners in 1981 after a spilled drink splashed a wiseguy’s girlfriend.
FRIEND IN HIGH PLACES: Mafia wiseguys Giuseppe Gambina (left) Ralph Sciulla (right) smile the night away with then-Sen. Al D’Amato in the early 1990s. Sciulla’s body was found on Long Island in a car trunk.
FRIEND IN HIGH PLACES: Mafia wiseguys Giuseppe Gambina (left) Ralph Sciulla (right) smile the night away with then-Sen. Al D’Amato in the early 1990s. Sciulla’s body was found on Long Island in a car trunk.
While D’Amato’s photo has no connection to the murder, prosecutors hope it will help prove that Vernace’s actions were part of a pattern of Mafia racketeering and document his connections to other wiseguys.
In the photo, D’Amato stands between Gambino associate Ralph Sciulla and Bonanno associate Giuseppe Gambina.
Sciulla was a member of Vernace’s mob crew, the feds say, but just months after the photo was taken he was dead, his body stuffed into car trunk and discovered on Long Island on Aug. 7, 1992.
But the prized photo lived on, hanging for years in a mob social club in Queens run by Vernace.

Did You Know that 50 Italians were Lynched in the US

Please take the time to see this Video & learn more about Italians & Lynching

Linciati: Lynchings of Italians in America (2004)

Linciati: Lynchings of Italians in America (2004) Unlike other European immigrants who struggled initially to become “white” in America, such as the Irish and the Jews, Italian immigrants fought a hostile reception even beyond the third generation in the U.S. Despite or perhaps because of the nearly quintessential American families of the Corleones and the Sopranos, young people of Italian descent are still given affirmative action scholarships, at least in New York City, to entice them to go to college and take part in the American Dream. Although European immigrants were initially granted automatic citizenship thanks to the privileging of white skin that inspired the Naturalization Act of 1790, thus le! ading to the large-scale immigration of Europeans of the 19th and 20th century, it took Italians several generations to be perceived as entirely “white”, while the Irish and Jews were essentially “white” by the second generation.

Sicilian immigrants were particularly suspect: not only were they more olive-skinned then their northern European counterparts, but the timing of the arrival of the majority of Sicilian immigrants (between 1880-1921, over 4 million Italians entered the U.S.) made their initiation into the racial quagmire of the Reconstruction period in the U.S. much more rocky than other immigrant groups. Although the vast majority of lynchings targeted African Americans, and while Native Americans, Jews, Mexicans and Chinese men were also lynched during this period. The number of Italians and the geog! raphic range of the lynchings are astounding: there are a total of over 50 documented cases of lynchings of Italians in such places as New York, Florida, Mississippi, Arizona, Colorado, Kentucky, Chicago, Florida, and Seattle, Washington.

In this powerful, and painful, documentary, M. Heather Hartley illustrates the violent prejudice that many Italian immigrants and Italian Americans faced in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The film examines the convergence of social, economic and historical causes of the unspoken history of the lynching of Italians throughout the U.S. during this period. The most dramatic case of lynching occurred in 1891 New Orleans, when 11 Italians were lynched by a mob. This event, which is widely known in Italy even today, is mentioned in a brief paragraph or footnote in most American history texts.

WOW CODY WILSON IS MAKING EVERYONE STAND UP AND NOTICE 3D GUNS

The ATF Has Yet to Be Convinced That 3D-Printed Guns Compare to the Real ...
Motherboard (blog)

Around the same time that Cody Wilson took the stage at SXSW to discuss his new for-profit 3D-printing design database earlier this month, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) was finalizing his application to become a federally-licensed firearms manufacturer. Wilson stood in front of the crowd and talked about how everyone should have access to technology that made it easy for them to print gun parts in their garages.
He talked about Defense Distributed, the organization he and some friends set up to offer 3D-printed gun designs to the masses for free through a website called DEFCAD, and finally addressed the government's role in the manufacture of firearms. "I'm not soliciting help from the government," he said.
"We are trying to follow the law as it is now and be good citizens," Wilson added. "I don't view government as a benign institution."
Well, the government doesn't seem entirely sure what to think of Wilson's own institution. I talked to a number of ATF representatives, all of whom sent a similar message: 3D-printed gun technology has arrived, but it's not good enough yet to start figuring out how to regulate it.
"We are aware of all the 3D printing of firearms and have been tracking it for quite a while," Earl Woodham, spokesperson for the ATF field office in Charlotte, told me. "Our firearms technology people have looked at it, and we have not yet seen a consistently reliable firearm made with 3D printing."

Ray Kurzweil & Google Perfect Together

EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW: RAY KURZWEIL DISCUSSES HIS FIRST TWO MONTHS AT GOOGLE

In another exclusive interview with Singularity Hub, Ray Kurzweil provides an update about his first two months as Director of Engineering at Google. During the interview Kurzweil revealed that his team is collaborating with other groups at Google to enable computers to understand and speaking language just like humans.  Kurzweil also tells us how Larry Page personally recruited him to join Google to pursue the goal of creating machines that can think and reason like the human brain.
Speaking with Singularity Hub Founder Keith Kleiner, Ray explained that ”My project is to get the Google computers to understand natural language, not just do search and answer questions based on links and words, but actually understand the semantic content. That’s feasible now.” To successfully do this will involve employing technologies that are already at Google like the Knowledge Graph, which has 700 million different concepts and billions of relationships between them. His team will also develop software as part of a system that will be “biological inspired” and can learn in a way analogous to the way the human brain is designed, that is, in a hierarchical structure.

AS holidays go, a one-way ticket to a waterless rock spinning in space some 225 million kilometres away, with a climate where temperatures can plunge down to -153C perhaps isn't one you'd imagine many folk queuing up for.
Nevertheless, around 30 Scots have applied for a spaceflight project which hopes to settle the first humans on the planet of Mars – if they don't die in the process. If the amateur astronauts manage to survive the rigours of interplanetary travel, the big question remains how they will manage to live in the barren Martian landscape – because there will not be any trip back to planet Earth.
Dutch entrepreneur Bas Lansdorp will discuss his plans for the 2023 mission during a talk taking place at this year's Edinburgh International Science Festival.

Italians should never forget

New Orleans, 1891

The fate of numerous Italian Americans was no different than that of other ethnic groups targeted by lynch mobs. The most infamous lynching of Italians occurred on March 14, 1891 in New Orleans. This event claimed eleven victims and was one of the largest multiple lynchings in American history. The catalyst for this tragedy was the unsolved murder of popular city police superintendent David Hennessy. Hennessy’s murder led to a roundup of the “usual suspects” -- in this case Italians. Those detained, immigrants from Sicily and the southern portions of Italy -- possessed swarthy complexions and were viewed with suspicion and contempt by the white protestant elite ruling New Orleans. Akin to Negroes, Italians were “not quite white” and subject to a racial prejudice only slightly subtler -- mingled with a baseless and deliberately orchestrated Mafia scare associating most Italian Americans with a vast criminal organization that did not exist in the New Orleans of that era.

The morning of March 14 was bright and sunny. By ten o’clock, a crowd of thousands was gathered by the Parish Jail, with many of them shouting, “Yes, yes, hang the dagoes!” The prison was soon attacked by a carefully selected band culled by the mobs’ leaders comprised of about twenty-five well-armed men. With battering rams ringing in their ears, the prisoners were both trapped and doomed. In the prison yard where several Italians were clustered together at one end, the hit squad of lynchers opened fire from about twenty feet away. More than a hundred rifle shots and shotgun blasts were fired into six helpless men, tearing their bodies apart. When the firing stopped, the squad inspected their victims. A man saw Pietro Monasterio’s hand twitch and yelled, “Hey, this one’s alive!” “Give him another load, “ another gunman answered. “Can’t, I ain’t got the heart.” Then one of the men walked up to the body, aimed a shotgun point-blank, and literally blew the top of Monasterio’s head away. Someone laughed. There were two or three cheers. One or two men turned their faces away, looking sick.

So it went. Joseph P. Macheca, Antonio Scaffidi, and Antonio Marchesi were shot while turning to face their pursuers. Marchesi was struck in the head by a bullet. As he raised his right hand to shield himself a shotgun charge blew off and went on to disintegrate the top of his skull. Yet he did not die until nine hours later, lying all the time where he fell.

More gunmen found Manuel Polizzi. Sitting on the floor in a corner of a cell, muttering to himself. Dragged by five men into a corridor he was shot two or three times while staring with wild eyes at nothing in particular. Antonio Bagnetto was found in another cell, pretending to be dead. He too was shot. Several of the men’s corpses were displayed to the mob outside the prison and hung on lampposts for all to see. Witnesses said that the cheers were nearly deafening.
