Mum's the word for Vito Lopez co-star of "Sex in The Assembly"

New York Times‎ -
Published: January 24, 2013

ALBANY — Assemblyman Vito J. Lopez has declined to testify in an investigation being conducted by the state ethics commission into claims that he sexually harassed four former aides and the Legislature’s response to those allegations.

On his lawyer’s advice, Mr. Lopez also does not plan to testify in a parallel inquiry being conducted by a special prosecutor. Mr. Lopez’s lawyer, Gerald B. Lefcourt, said he had advised the assemblyman, who is also a former Brooklyn Democratic Party chairman, not to testify in either inquiry because of the criminal investigation.

Well did anyone real think he was going to "TALK" while under investigation.

Paterson admits he OK’d 'tainted' casino firm to help then-state Senate Majority Leader John Sampson

  • Last Updated: 5:59 AM, January 10, 2013
  • Posted: 1:57 AM, January 10, 2013
Never mind what was best for taxpayers — former Gov. David Paterson admitted yesterday that he signed off on a deal to award the Aqueduct racino contract to a “tainted” bidder in 2009 to help then-state Senate Majority Leader John Sampson cling to power.
But Paterson said yesterday he was surprised — and troubled — that federal authorities are now conducting a criminal probe of the Aqueduct contract over suspected bid-rigging.
Paterson said the explosive federal inquiry — revealed in Tuesday ‘s Post — comes three years after the state inspector general’s scathing report accused Sampson, Sen. Malcolm Smith and others of helping Aqueduct Entertainment Group land the multibillion-dollar pact.

Albany’s latest stench

  • NY POST EDITORIAL Last Updated: 11:09 PM, January 10, 2013-Posted: January 11, 2013
Reports of political rot in Albany keep a-comin’ — with revelations this week by The Post of probes of top Democrats in a sleazy deal that, by his own admission, even ensnared ex-Gov. David Paterson.
For starters, the feds are investigating whether state Sens. John Sampson and Malcolm Smith and others were involved in a scheme to steer a multibillion-dollar contract to a politically juiced firm, AEG, to run a racino at Aqueduct Race Track.
And on Wednesday, the ex-gov admitted that he backed AEG for political reasons — as opposed to what was best for the state.
Paterson said he sided with Sampson because he wanted to help the “vulnerable” Democratic majority leader.
Yet the AEG plan involved folks with shady backgrounds and clearly should’ve been shot down.
The Post also reported that a second, broader probe targets Sampson, involving his ties to Queens Rep. Greg Meeks and convicted real-estate magnate Edul Ahmad.
Smith, by the way, is also a subject of the broader inquiry.
Does it ever end?
The NY Post is hot on the AEGATE scandal and I am sure they will have a lot more to say and more breaking stories.

Wanted: Mars Colonists to Explore Red Planet

If you think you have the right stuff to help colonize Mars, you'll soon get your chance to prove it.
The Netherlands-based nonprofit Mars One, which hopes to put the first boots on the Red Planet in 2023, released its basic astronaut requirements today (Jan. 8), setting the stage for a televised global selection process that will begin later this year.
Mars One isn't zeroing in on scientists or former fighter pilots; anyone who is at least 18 years old can ap! ply to become a Mars colony pioneer. The most important criteria, officials say, are intelligence, good mental and physical health and dedication to the project, as astronauts will undergo eight years of training before launch.
"Gone are the days when bravery and the number of hours flying a supersonic jet were the top criteria," Norbert Kraft, Mars One's chief medical director and a former NASA researcher, said in a statement. "Now, we are more concerned with how well each astronaut works and lives with the others, in the long journey from Earth to Mars and for a lifetime of challenges ahead."
Mars One plans to launch a series of robotic cargo missions between 2016 and 2021, which will build a habitable Red Planet outpost ahead of the arrival of the first four colonists in 2023. More settlers will arrive every two years after that. There are no plans to return the pioneers to Earth. [Mars One: 'Big Brother' on Mars? (Video)]

T! he organization will fund most of its ambitious activities by staging a global reality-TV event that follows the colonization effort from astronaut selection through the settlers' first years on Mars.
Mars One, which transitioned from a private company to a nonprofit late last year, has already received a number of inquiries from prospective colonists, officials said.
"Well before the official Astronaut Selection Program, we received more than 1,000 emails from individuals who desire to go to Mars," Suzanne Flinkenflögel, Mars One's communications director, said in a statement. "We are working hard to launch our selection campaign as soon as possible, to open the doors to everyone who aspires ! to do something tremendous in their lifetime."
Final astronaut candidates will be selected after review by Mars One experts and a global TV event. Those chosen will be employed by Mars One during their Earth-based training and for the length of their time on the Red Planet, officials said.

Meeks Cronies Probed in Aqueduct Bid Rigging Scheme
Submitted by Ken Boehm on Tue, 01/08/2013 - National Legal and Policy Center

The New York Post reports today that federal prosecutors are investigating close associates of Rep. Gregory Meeks (D-NY) as part of probe into a possible casino bid-rigging scheme at Aqueduct Racetrack. According to the Post:

Investigators are asking questions about the roles of then-Senate Democratic leaders John Sampson and Malcolm Smith and others who were accused of helping the Aqueduct Entertainment Group (AEG) land a multibillion-dollar casino contract three years ago, sources said.

The AEG bid became controversial after NLPC exposed several individuals involved with the bid, including Malcolm Smith, as also being involved with a charity called New Direction Local Development Corporation. New Direction appeared to operate as a slush fund for Meeks and his friends. It also raised money for Hurricane Katrina victims who never received the aid.
In 2010, then-New York Governor David Paterson granted a lucrative gambling franchise to AEG, touching off a firestorm against the backdrop of the New Direction headlines. Fuel was added to the fire when Paterson met with former Rep. Floyd Flake, a purported AEG "investor," to discuss his support for Paterson's re-election campaign. According to the Post:
