CityTime 'kickbacks'

Project boss pocketed $5.6M: feds

Last Updated: 12:39 AM, May 28, 2011
Posted: 12:38 AM, May 28, 2011

The former project manager of the scandal-scarred CityTime payroll project was charged yesterday with intentionally delaying its completion and driving up its enormous costs in exchange for at least $5.6 million in kickbacks from a subcontractor.
Gerard Denault was allegedly left in charge of CityTime -- which has so far cost taxpayers more than $720 million, up from an estimated $63 million budget a decade ago -- despite warnings that he was scheming with subcontractor TechnoDyne to pad its bills.
The scam went on as Denault got a series of promotions that boosted his annual salary from about $193,000 in 2004 to nearly $645,000 last year as his alleged scam pumped up the project's profitability

In a statement announcing Denault's arrest, US Attorney Preet Bharara noted that "there are more individuals yet to be held accountable" in the case.

No restrooms at 9/11 Memorial and Museum

Last Updated: 5:47 AM, May 22, 2011

The National September 11th Memorial and Museum is flush with cash -- but not bathrooms.
The nonprofit foundation running the $508 million project is expecting millions of visitors from across the globe to flock to lower Manhattan when it opens this year on the 10th anniversary of the World Trade Center attacks. But there won't be a single toilet available on the eight-acre green plaza -- a planning oversight now raising concerns in closed-door meetings.
Two large reflecting pools and cascading waterfalls on the site are intended to create a serene environment for quiet contemplation of the lives lost during the terror attacks. They may also be a frustrating reminder there's nowhere to relieve oneself.

The closest bathrooms available will be inside the discount department store Century21, across the wide 16-acre plaza on Cortlandt Street. Employees there fully expect a flood of visitors dashing to its basement-level stalls.

City Hall officials conceded that bathrooms were left out of the plans for the memorial, which will feature the names of the 2,982 victims of the World Trade Center attacks inscribed on bronze panels around the reflecting pools. They said there are also no plans to haul porta-potties to the picturesque, tree-filled site for its official debut.

After Roasting, Trump Reacts In Character
NY Times
Published: May 1, 2011
He was savagely mocked by President Obama and the comedian Seth Meyers at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner — belittled as a political charlatan with an unchecked ego and a dead fox plastered on his head.
But the next morning, Donald J. Trump was not laughing. He was doing what seems to come more naturally: lashing out.
“Seth Meyers has no talent,” Mr. Trump said in an interview on Sunday. “He fell totally flat. In fact, I thought Seth’s delivery was so bad that he hurt himself.”
Mr. Trump, who appeared unsmiling throughout most of the annual dinner on Saturday night, acknowledged his occasional discomfort (“I am not looking to laugh along with my enemies”) but said he viewed the rough treatment as a measure of the fear he has struck in the Washington establishment. “It was like a roast of Donald Trump,” he said, clearly reveling in the attention, if not the content.
The Trump-centric dinner capped what could only be described as the Week of the Donald — a dizzying span in which the developer and reality television star drove the news (compelling the president to release his full birth certificate) and became the news (after delivering a profanity-laced speech in Las Vegas).
